Through my work, I have the privilege of meeting and talking with staff and volunteers from many local community organisations and I often hear how much more their organisation could do if they had more funding.

Community organisations often rely on fundraising so a lack of finance is a common obstacle to completing projects that have the potential to make our community a better place.
Expressions of interest for round three of the federal government’s Stronger Communities program are now open now.
This could be a great opportunity for community groups and non-profit organisations to use this funding to complete these outstanding projects.
The program delivers dollar-for-dollar grant funding, from $2500 to a maximum of $20,000, to community organisations.
The application process for round two of the Stronger Communities program began in 2016 before Port Macquarie was formally part of the Cowper electorate, but there were some very worthy recipients in the Kempsey area.
One such recipient was Kempsey-Macleay Men’s Shed which is building three new rooms in their new shed thanks to a $16,400 grant.
Using this funding they will build a computer room to host their Broadband for Seniors program, an office for the organisation’s administration, and a lunch room for a cuppa and a chat, in their new shed which will soon be built.
A year on, John Hastings, shed manager for Kempsey-Macleay Men’s Shed, is still delighted with their grant success. “This funding was a God-send. It would have taken us years to fund-raise or find this money elsewhere so we’re really grateful,” John said.
