A total of 18 controlled experiments conducted by the University of Greenwich tested the analgesic effects of alcohol and found a small increase in pain threshold.
A moderate to large decrease in pain ratings was also observed.
So, can two pots of beer a day keep the doctor away?
It appears the short answer is no, but they may give you some short-term pain relief.
The study found consuming two pots of beer could cut discomfort by up to a quarter.
However, the study authors were quick to point out that over-indulging in the beverage could negatively affect long-term health.
Rafferty’s Tavern assistant manager Chrissy van de Camp said she was surprised by the findings of the study.
“I thought it was more of a relaxant than a pain reliever,” she said.
She said the hotel had a number of regular patrons who enjoyed a pot of beer or two to unwind after a stressful day.
