Five Port Macquarie-Hastings students were announced as major award winners at TAFE NSW’s North Coast Student of the Year awards on May 10 in Coffs Harbour.

The awards recognised the efforts of TAFE NSW students studying on campus, in a profession or online in 2016.
Rebeka Harrison was named as Business Services Student of the Year. She completed her Certificate IV in Leadership and Management at the campus in Port Macquarie.
Ms Harrison chose to pursue a career in the vehicle repair industry because she enjoyed working in the automotive business.
“This trade is always varying with new cars and models,” she said.
Community Services and Health Student of the Year Nerida Wallace completed her Diploma of Enrolled Nursing.
Ms Wallace completed her Certificate III in Aged Care in 2015 and was offered a Scholarship through NSW Health for the Diploma of Enrolled Nursing. Ms Wallace was registered as an enrolled nurse in December 2016.
Aboriginal Student of the Year April Crutcher completed her Diploma of Community Services.
Ms Crutcher chose to complete a Diploma of Community Services because she wanted to give back to the community by being in a profession that helps others.
Information Technology Student of the Year Toby Denley completed his Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology.
Mr Denley said the diverse experience provided through his study has allowed him to ‘test many areas with first-hand experience’.
The Primary Industries Student of the Year Kirralee Balkin completed her Certificate II in Horticulture at Wauchope campus.
Ms Balkin said she wanted to gain work in the industry because she is passionate about the environment and plants.
TAFE NSW North Region regional manager Elizabeth McGregor said she was inspired and moved by the dedication and commitment shown by winning students and the finalists.
“They’ve all decided where and what they want to be and they have gone for it with great ambition and confidence,” said Ms McGregor.
