It was a day of extreme and crippling conditions but no-one could imagine what was to come for the residents of Pappinbarra.
The warnings were dire and they were not wrong. We had time to prepare but it wasn’t enough. The result was catastrophic and the aftermath for those who lost homes, livestock and everything they owned will be a long and difficult battle. And we will be there to support them.
But, from all darkness there is light and the spirit of the Wauchope community shone bright.
To the champions of our emergency services crews, our tireless volunteer fire fighters and individuals who without a thought offered a helping hand – we thank you.
Everyone affected by the weekend’s devastation has a story to tell and underpinning their extraordinary experiences are resilience, determination, fortitude and selflessness.
To the RFS volunteer who battled the fire front for 13 hours before going home to his own family, resting and then returning at 6am the following day – thank you.
To the Beechwood School canteen volunteers who opened their door and hearts to emergency crews, volunteers and fire-affected families offering food, drinks and a smile – thank you.
To the Wauchope Showground committee for offering those who had to flee their properties a safe place to rest – thank you.
To the property owners offering paddocks for livestock, the local businesses generously donating goods and services to those with nothing and everyone who was able to give time, support, a smile and a little love – you have shown what being ‘local’ is all about.
The spirit shown in the aftermath of the Pappinbarra fires is the foundation on which our regional communities are built.
In our busy lives it is all too easy to forget that the smallest gestures can be the greatest gifts.
