Her event, part of the ‘It’s in the Bag’ Christmas campaign, sought to collect good quality, second-hand handbags filled with items to remind women doing it tough, that someone cares and they are not alone.
In all, a staggering 145 bags were donated to Michelle’s event. The bags were brimming with everyday hygiene and sanitary items like soaps, shampoos, moisturisers, tampons and pads, along with a few special luxuries like perfume, make up and jewellery.
The handbags will be given to women’s refuges in Port Macquarie, Kempsey and the Great Lakes.
“I’ve been blown away by the support for this,” Michelle said.
“Women who make homemade soaps and lip balms donated their goods, businesses in the local area supported us, basically whatever anyone had they donated which was awesome.
“A lady on holidays in the area from Lightning Ridge saw the post on Facebook and bought three bag, filled them and donated before she went home.
“Paulz Cake Creations and Mel’s Pantry donated cakes and sandwiches for the afternoon. The staff at Lake Cathie Bowling Club went out of their way to accommodate us. My mum, Carol Teerman, was my wingman helping with organising the event and doing pick-ups of bags from people who couldn’t attend on Saturday but wanted to support it.
“Everyone who came enjoyed a beautiful afternoon together. I didn’t think it would be so big. It was nice to see women empowering other women and raise awareness. The conversations I’ve had with other women about domestic violence and homelessness helped people understand that it’s a big problem here.”
Michelle is keen to support the Share the Dignity campaign next year. The Port News will keep you posted on collection points for the ‘It’s in the Bag’ campaign in 2017.
