From retirees who are after a social and healthy outdoor activity, to younger adults looking for a lower physical competitive activity after years of combative sport, to youths enjoying a new game to them.
For over 80-years lawn bowls has been played in Port Macquarie and from early volunteering efforts has grown into highly successful community clubs.
The pressure on these clubs to remain profitable has seen the demise of many Bowling clubs in NSW, with larger outside clubs taking them over and the subsequent diminution of bowls sponsorship within these clubs.
Port Macquarie clubs in the past have had the record of the largest lawn bowling membership in NSW, if not the world, and are favoured for holding State events, even hosting International players.
Recently the area saw the holding of a State Woman’s Lawn Bowls event which attracted players from clubs all over the state and was played at all the bowling clubs in the area; Port City, Westport, Hibbard, Wauchope, Lake Cathie, North Haven, Kew.
This week at Port City a Blind Bowlers tournament is being played. To experience the pleasure these bowlers have for the game is life lifting. With instructions being given by assistants, these players show real ability and fierce competitiveness.
