The theme of Wednesday’s action, which included a street theatre performance, was Pollution Free Politics.
Cowper Climate Action Players performed a pantomime at the action organised by the Climate Change Australia Hastings Branch.
Climate Change Australia Hastings Branch president Harry Creamer said it was time to end fossil fuel donations and subsidies.
Grassroots groups across Australia, with the support of 350.org Australia, are running the Pollution Free Politics campaign.
Mr Creamer said Climate Change Australia Hastings Branch was asking voters to consider the issue when deciding how to vote.
“We are asking people to vote for a safe climate and clean energy,” he said.
The group has called on Dr Gillespie to sign a pollution free politics pledge, indicating support for a ban on fossil fuel subsidies and political donations from fossil fuel companies.
Dr Gillespie was not at his office at the time of the climate action event.
Climate Change Australia Hastings Branch also challenged Dr Gillespie and Cowper MP Luke Hartsuyker to a debate about the government’s climate change policy.
Dr Gillespie said he understood there would be a number of candidate forums throughout the electorate ahead of the federal election.
“There will be many issues to discuss including the economy, infrastructure, employment, health, education, pensions, childcare, national security and of course the environment to name but a few,” he said.
“I am more than happy to discuss these issues throughout those forums.
“I am not a single issue person, I represent the broad interests of my electorate and I will continue to do so.”
Mr Hartsuyker declined the offer to take part in the debate as he gets inundated with requests to speak at events and forums during the election campaign and can’t get to them all.
