Batt was captain of the Australian Steelers team who won the Four Nations Wheelchair Rugby final when they defeated Great Britain 57-49 in the final.

He was also judged as the most valuable player of the tournament which made it a double-whammy and a definite cause for celebration.

“I’ve never played rugby or been overseas on my birthday before so the boys all stitched me up all morning and sang happy birthday so it was awesome to do something like that on my birthday,” Batt said.

“It wasn’t a huge tournament for us in terms of Paralympic gold, but to receive an MVP was added topping on the cake. It’s one I’ll definitely remember.”

Batt said he saw the tournament as a measuring stick for the Australians with the Rio Paralympics just 105 days away.

The Steelers now know they can match it with the best teams in the world after they slipped to number four in the rankings.

“The whole world caught up to us prior to February and now I’m so glad it happened because it’s made us better as a team,” Batt said.

“I’d rather sit at number four in the world than come out as number one in Rio.”

Australia will test themselves against similar opponents in three weeks’ time when they travel to Canada.

“It’s interesting because every team is hiding their cards a little bit,” Batt said.

“It’ll be interesting in Rio, but we’re more confident now because it was a bit scary at the end of last year. Everyone caught up to us but now we’re back in the hot seat and ready to go.”

They know the hard work has only just begun as they aim to replicate their gold medal success from London 2012.

“Backing it up is going to be even harder so we’re hopeful of another 105 days of hard work and we’ll get there because it will be so worth it,” he said.

“I’m confident but you don’t want to get overconfident because that’s what cost us a little bit at the end of the year, but we’re definitely confident.

“Winning a gold medal was one of the hardest things I’ve had an accomplishment in my life let alone the team.”
