SURFING
OVER the years the Bird Rock Surf Classic has continued to get bigger and better and the 2016 version was no different.
This year 120 competitors aged between 10 years old and 65 took to the water at Rainbow Beach and North Haven with conditions on Saturday believed to be the pick of the weekend.
Spokesman Geoff Branch said while the conditions were small the surfing was "still good".
"Bird Rock always pulls out plenty of helpers and this year was no different," he said.
Taree sisters Lucy and Chelsea Green were standout performers in the open cadet division with Chelsea qualifying for three finals on Sunday afternoon while Kai McKenzie was also a standout.
"Bird Rock used to be mainly about the men so it's good to see more girls getting involved," Branch said.
"It's been going for 36 years and is a day where Hastings Valley surfers that have passed can be remembered."
