EDITORIAL: Roads message not sinking in

THE Telegraph Point locals have lost a great character in Paul Lloyd after a tragic road accident on Tuesday night.

Regardless of the circumstances or blame for that incident, it is a timely reminder that all drivers need to be aware and responsible, particularly as we travel with family this long weekend.

It is pertinent to read and absorb the following police tips for motorists:

■ Plan trips in advance

■ Stick to the speed limit

■ Take regular rest breaks

■ Ensure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seatbelt

■ Drive to the conditions

■ Don’t drink and drive

■ Don’t use hand-held electronic devices when behind the wheel.

We already have lost 296 people to roads-related accidents this year, which is 38 more than the same period last year.

Take your time, and if you see someone in the car disobeying the guides above, remind them.
