AN OLD plywood surf ski made in the 1950s has been restored and will soon take pride of place at Port Macquarie Surf Lifesaving Club.

The ski, which was made for club member Brian Carr, was constructed by Brian and Henry Moore in the Carr's lounge room in 1955.

Both men were active members of Port Macquarie Surf Lifesaving Club. Brian was club president in 1967-68 and Henry was 1968 club captain.

A competent ski paddler all his life, Brian loved nothing more than to go for a paddle with his mate, and Jim's older brother, Larry Pullen. Larry was also a top paddler. He came second in the Australian titles in 1960 and was well known in Port Macquarie as a maker of fibreglass skis.

The plywood ski was given to Allan Witchard in 1980 so he could start training for the ironman event. Allan had previously won three state titles in the Junior Belt event during the 1970s.

Jim Pullen recently restored the ski, which is to be presented to the Port Macquarie Surf Lifesaving Club this season. The club plans to use it as an honour board.

It was a labour of love for Jim, who can't help wondering where the ski was between 1958 and 1980, when Allan Witchard took it over.

"I sure would be interested to hear from anyone who knows where it was during those years," Jim says. Jim has been a member of the Port Macquarie club since 1958 and a Life Member since 1990. He was a top ski paddler himself, winning the Double Surf Ski event at the 1970 Australian titles.

"I've still got my first surf lifesaving pennant won at Hat Head in 1961," he says. Jim's son Steven Pullen is also an Australian champion. He won the ironman event at the 1977-78 Australian titles.

Jim is due for his 50 year Long Service Membership at Port Macquarie Surf Lifesaving Club. Use of the superb plywood ski to record a portion of the club's history will no doubt make him a very happy man.
