Most of the matches were played on Saturday with the exception being the clash between Bill MacDonald and Terry Davis. This match was played on Friday and it was a beauty.
In the PTW KO the lower marker in the match plays from scratch and his opponent plays from three quarters of the difference between their handicaps.
This meant that Davis had to give MacDonald a shot at three holes. Davis appeared to have a stranglehold on the match early in the second nine when he got out to a three hole lead.
He was still three up with four left to play but two wins to MacDonald and then a halved hole saw Davis one up with one to play. MacDonald won the last hole which meant that the players had to go back down the first in sudden death. At the first extra hole Davis played a superb approach shot which left him with a tap in birdie putt which MacDonald conceded. MacDonald failed with his birdie putt which meant that Davis had progressed to the next round.
In the second round Davis will play Mark Bensley who had a comfortable six and five win over Neil Smith.
Smith said that he played OK but Bensley was just too consistent and too strong. There were no strokes in this match as Bensley and Smith had the same handicap.
That will not be the case in the second round as Davis is a two marker while Bensley plays off 15.
The other quarter final in the bottom half of the draw should also be a good one as both players are experienced pennant players. Jackson Jubelin, who plays off scratch, might be only 16 years of age but he has been playing pennant golf for a number of years. His second round opponent will be the captain of the club’s division two pennant team Stuart Rayner, who now is off five.
Both Rayner and Jubelin had to give away a lot of shots start in the opening round yet both had good wins. Rayner had a two and one win over Tim Gwyther and Jubelin was too strong for Richard Semmence, winning five and four.
Andrew Goulding and Steve Wallace have both performed well in the PTW KO in past years and their round one clash went right down to the wire with Goulding winning two up.
Jonathon Toombs got the last qualifying spot for the match play and as a result he had to play Dave McGrath, who was the leading qualifier.
Their match went the full distance with Toombs winning one up. Toombs will come up against Goulding in the next round.
In the remaining quarter final Ross Charlton will play Mark Haverfield after Charlton beat Paul Thongkai one up and Haverfield had a five and four win over Paul Rolls.
