Casey is travelling to Maitland three times per week for training ahead of the looming season kick-off, and is looking forward to a strong showing with the team.
Maitland was promoted to the first division this season.
Casey, a midfielder, came close to netting in a trial against Valentine Phoenix.
He came off the bench as his team came from behind to win 3-2.
Casey couldn't wait to take to the park for the first round on April. FC will take on South Cardiff FC at Ulinga Oval.
Casey said he was learning a lot from Thompson.
Thompson has played for Newcastle Jets, Melbourne Heart and Sydney FC.
"Yeah he's a good player," Casey said.
He looked forward to tackling the Lambton Jaffas who feature former English Premier League player Michael Bridges.
That match is set down for May 30 Arthur Edden Oval in Lambton, Newcastle.
Casey spent "four or five years" at the Green Bloods and said he would miss playing with the Port team.
The team would miss him too, according to coach Chris Walsh.
Casey has been a mainstay in the midfield for the past few seasons.
"He's a very skilled player," Walsh said.
"If he can stay fit, he's got a big future in the game.
"It will be a shame to see him go. We wish him all the best."
