The spokesperson said Kmart was currently working through the development application approval and was committed to opening a new format Kmart store in addition to speciality shops in Port Macquarie in the near future.
"We are unable to give an exact timing regarding the start on site date, however we are working closely with council on the plans and are looking forward to bringing the community an offering that will benefit the area," the spokesperson said.
Port Macquarie-Hastings councillors in May approved the $17.6 million development on land fronting Park and Warlters streets, which was previously the home of St Joseph's Regional High School.
The conditional approval paves the way for a Kmart store, specialty shops and 375-space car park with access from Park Street and Warlters Street.
There will be road upgrades, landscaping and traffic management work.
A monthly maintenance schedule is in place including mowing, removal of unsafe trees when necessary, and checking fences surrounding the area.
Kmart has contacted the contractor to follow-up recent work in response to a letter received by the Port Macquarie News which described the block as an eyesore of long grass.
