AN AMAZING dedication to Port Macquarie’s Flamin’ Dragons club and the Catholic Women’s League of Australia were the catalysts for Patricia Waters’ OAM recognition on Australia Day.

A founding member of Port Macquarie’s Catholic Women’s League of Australia branch, Mrs Waters achievements with the nationwide organisation are nothing short of impressive.
Mrs Waters was awarded life membership of the organisation in 1997 for more than 25 years’ service in Canberra and NSW.
State executive service paved the way for branch openings and members’ development, and Mrs Waters helped establish the organisation in Port Macquarie.
Religion is as important as ever for Mrs Waters, and the organisation has taught her a lot.
Her award is also special for husband Max. He was recognised with an OAM in 1999 for services to surf lifesaving.
A breast cancer survivor, Mrs Waters founded the Dragonboat club 10 years ago.
She can’t take to the water these days, which is a shame for someone so integral to the success of the boaters.
The humble Mrs Waters was “totally blown away” by the recognition on Australia Day.
“I’m not often speechless, but I was speechless when I received it,” she said.
Mrs Waters’ attitude typifies any loyal community servant.
“I don’t think anyone does any community work for recognition,” she said. “I think it’s just a case of you do it because you want to do it.
“That in itself gave me a lot of satisfaction. I think most people are the same.”
While she is humble, not being able to share her good news has been difficult: “Sitting on it has been hard.”
She would also like the opportunity to thank the person who nominated her.
“I would really like to thank them, and I will do that as soon as I know, if they tell me. I can’t imagine people volunteering that information.”
