James Bernard Deeth was charged in relation to the stabbing death of a Port Macquarie father on Horton Street in September.
Mr Deeth was supported by a large group in the public gallery, and represented by Sydney criminal lawyer Robert Daoud, who asked for Mr Deeth's bail to be continued.
Magistrate Thomas Hodgson granted the request until the matter is heard on January 22, 2015.
Mr Deeth has to report daily to Kempsey police as part of those conditions.
A 16-year-old charged with the alleged murder appeared on audio visual link.
His bail was refused, and he will also appear in Port Macquarie Children's Court on January 22.
