Howard is the only Port competitor taking part in the weekend's event, and he wants to make up for a self-described ordinary performance at the state titles earlier this year.
"It was terrible," Howard said of the way he surfed then. "I think I made it to round two."
He has had plenty of time on the board recently. And has just returned from a surfing trip to Fiji.
"I went with a mate," he said. "It was so good. They had plenty of reef breaks."
Up for grabs at the event is a place at a Casuarina Surf Camp. Australia's leading surf coaches will be on hand to provide guidance and training participants need to make the next leap forward in their career.
Howard would be delighted to attend that camp: "I'd be stoked," he said.
He'll surf in the under 18s at Newcastle.
Howard said the break there was similar some of his favourites at home.
"It's a sandy, beach break," he said. "I've surfed there a couple of times."
Howard has had plenty of help in his short career so far. Mick Cain, Mitch van der Veer and Wayne Morrison have all been instrumental.
