However, United didn't know that McGovern, usually a centre back, would turn out to be a super-boot striker, netting 28 goals in 19 games this season.
More impressive was his feat against Wingham a month ago where he nabbed five goals in the one match.
"I've found the comp very competitive," he said.
"In the second division in Newcastle the bottom teams never really gave you much competition, but you certainly get it tough every week here.
"It's my first full season up front and I guess it's just being able to get this opportunity, enjoying my football and taking it with both hands.
"The players around me have been great, we have lots of quality players in the side which makes my job easier."
He well and truly turned up the heat in the local competition, with his physical prowess and powerful strikes a highlight for what has been a great season for Chris Walsh's men.
"Dan came to us from Maitland FC this season after training with us all of last pre-season," Walsh said.
"He decided to jump on board this year and he has been a great asset.
"We have put him into the striker position and he's taken it on and gone from strength to strength with his size and determination the biggest assets, as well as his work ethic."
What sets McGovern apart from many other football players on the Mid North Coast is not his natural skills and ability but rather his mental toughness, according to Walsh.
"He's very hard on himself, Walsh said.
"He's his own biggest critic so he never gives up and always strives to improve."
"He's a bit of a talisman to the club. When he fires the rest of the team seem to fire as well."
McGovern swirled a brilliant free kick around the Macleay Valley wall last weekend to add another to his tally and help his side to this weekend's grand final.
The action kicks off at 2.45pm at Regional Stadium. Read Monday's Port News for match results and photos from the big day.
