The Sharks fought out a good win on the road at Forster while the Breakers were outclassed by the Macleay Valley Mustangs at home.
The Breakers went down 52-6 at Regional Stadium in another disappointing loss.
Mitch Turnell was the only shining light, scoring the Breakers' sole try of the afternoon.
New captain Adrian Daley was gutted by the loss.
"We only started with 15 players," he said.
"Then there were more injuries. It makes it hard when you're doing that."
Connor Cheeseman played 80 minutes in the second row.
Daley said the team would play for pride now, with virtually no chance of playing finals footy.
"It's going to be hard, but we're here to play footy for the club," he said.
Sharks coach Phil Trembath was a pleased man in Taree, after an arm wrestle in first grade.
Oral Monaghan scored in the dying minutes and his team hung on for the win.
"We dug deep," Trembath said.
"Oral scored with about five or seven to go."
Kurt Molony and Jake Flanagan scored two tries each. Monaghan kicked two goals to go with his try and Ethan McKenna booted one.
By Trembath's calculations, that puts his team into fourth place, a point behind third.
"Our aim is to get to third place," he said.
"Maintain that winning streak."
