Friday 5.40pm: Police have confirmed the Pacific Highway is now open in both directions. The two passengers in the Pajero, a 58-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man, remain in hospital but are in a stable condition.
Friday 4.50pm: Police have confirmed that a man has died at the scene of a two vehicle accident 300 metres south of Hastings River Drive this afternoon.
The accident occurred at about 3.20pm between a Ford Falcon and a four-wheel drive Pajero towing a caravan.
Police believe the accident occurred when the Ford Falcon, driven by the deceased, veered across the road and side-swiped the Pajero. The impact forced the caravan to veer into bushland on the side of the road.
An elderly couple in the Pajero were treated at the scene and have been taken to hospital for observation.
The State Emergency Service is at the scene with the Crash Investigation Unit and all other emergency services.
The Pacific Highway remains closed. Traffic is being diverted via Hastings River Drive and the Oxley Highway.

Friday 4.30pm: The Pacific Highway remains shut. All traffic is being diverted through Port Macquarie via Hastings River Drive or the Oxley Highway. The Crash Investigation Unit is now on site.
Friday 4pm: It is believed one person is confirmed deceased at the scene. All emergency services are now attending to other passengers.
Traffic is closed in both directions on the Pacific Highway and there will be no access to any vehicles for some time.
Motorists are urged to find alternative routes via Hastings River Drive or the Oxley Highway.
Friday 3.40pm: There are reports of a multi-vehicle accident on the Pacific Highway south of the Hastings River Drive. The SES has confirmed the accident has involved two vehicles and a caravan.
Initial reports are that there are passengers with serious injuries. Emergency services are at the scene.
