ABC television personality Costa Georgiadis has shared his grow your own food philosophy with Westport Primary School students.
Youngsters also got their hands dirty in the organic vegetable patch alongside Mr Georgiadis on Monday.
The ABC Gardening Australia host told the students when they grew something in their garden, it was in season and not pre-packaged and transported.
"The idea of growing your own food is about your health," he said.
Mr Georgiadis encouraged the students to grow food at home and the youngsters excitedly joined in the discussion.
"I love it when people get excited," he said.
"If you get excited about growing, that will mean you are excited about your health and ultimately the person in charge of your own health is you."
Mr Georgiadis built a no dig garden on Monday as part of the school's organic vegetable patch and Lake Innes Lettuce and Herbs donated seedlings to the project.
Senior students tend the vegetable patch and cook with the garden's produce. Teacher Debbie Bradtke said the aim was for the senior students to share their knowledge with the junior students. Mrs Bradtke said it was exciting to have Mr Georgiadis impart his knowledge and offer suggestions.
"It's just a wonderful opportunity for somebody with so much knowledge to share with us and help us create a no dig garden," she said.
Mr Georgiadis also visited St Columba Anglican School on Monday.
