The Magpies passed Pirates' total of just 61 with five wickets to spare at Oxley Oval, but at no stage was it comfortable.
Magpies sent the Pirates in to bat on a wet wicket and the batsmen were up against it from ball one.
It was 5-20 at one stage before the players came off as the rain came in. But the break was no respite. Pirates lost four quick wickets to be 9-31 after the break before Kirk Lower and Paul Stait saved a little bit of face, putting on 30 runs for the last wicket.
Magpie Jesse Schmidt was pleased with his team's bowling performance, especially after the break.
Adam Eckermann bowled full, straight and fast to pick up 4-19 from 9.5 overs.
Scott Dickson snared 3-5 from six.
Schmidt said his team got the Pirates bogged down at the crease.
"They didn't put us away [when the bad balls were bowled]," he said.
Lower's 16 was the highest score of the day. Stait wasn't too far behind with 15 not out.
There weren't too many high scores in the Magpies innings either.
Ben Schneider was the best with 26.
Schmidt made 12.
At 4-27, Schmidt said the camp was nervous, with wickets falling fast and the Pirates' bowling attack gaining momentum.
"The boots started to shake a little bit, especially when I was batting," he said.
Pirates captain Rod Morton said the total was too low to defend.
"We thought given the way the pitch was, 60 was going to be difficult," he said.
"The bowling was still pretty good, but we just didn't have enough runs in the end."
The first-grade competition returns to the one-day format for matches next weekend.
Magpies play Comboyne at Laurieton.
"It will be interesting to see how they go," Schmidt said of his opposition. "They're a good side."
The Pirates are still chasing their first win of the season, and will take on Wauchope RSL at Andrews Park.
