The Macca was in trouble at 6-68 last week after winning the toss and batting first, but a good partnership between new man Adrian Sippel and Daniel Kennedy took the score to 6-93 at stumps.
There were a couple of rain delays and the batting was difficult at times at Laurieton Oval, but Macquarie skipper Michael Pelley said he didn't see many wickets caused by the pitch.
Rather, his batsmen were guilty of throwing their wickets away, but Pelley still heaped praise on Comboyne's bowling effort.
"I thought they bowled pretty well," he said. "There was a bit of a lack of patience there from us."
Sippel and Kennedy steadied the ship, and Pelley said it was "promising".
It was Sippel's first game for the club. We threw him in at five to see what he could do," Pelley said. "He looks pretty handy."
The plan is to bat out the overs in the reduced match. Pelley is looking for anything upwards of 150 runs.
"We'll still have to bowl well," Pelley said.
One bonus is Comboyne captain Andrew Glover not playing the match.
"He's the best batsman in the district," Pelley said.
The Comboyne side still has some talent in its ranks though. Tom Rienstra and Tom Salter are threats to Pelley.
"And TJ Smith goes quite well."
Pelley is after some ideal bowling conditions.
"Hopefully the tide is up at Laurieton and the ball moves around a bit early," he said.
