As is so often the case in big games, it was Rangers' last line of defence which came to the rescue. Goalkeeper Shaun Glover saved the first two penalties to put his team on the road to victory.
He also made a brilliant save in golden goal extra time to keep his team in the contest. A Lake strike looked like a certain goal, but Glover punched it out with a full-stretch dive.
Byran Warren pulled out a similar stop at the other end as normal time was coming to an end. Rangers' Chad Applegate turned and hit a good shot, but Warren was equal to the task.
A needless penalty minutes earlier had tied things up. Applegate stepped up and slotted the ball home. It should have been his second of the afternoon. Applegate hit the inside of the post as fulltime neared and the deflection almost went back in off Warren, but bounced wide for a corner kick.
Beau Wynter had the chance to be a hero for Lake, but his low shot went inches wide.
Rangers found themselves behind after just a couple of minutes. Blake Barnes-Riddell belted a bouncing ball in the box home to open the scoring.
Rangers captain Steve Morn equalised with a free kick from out wide that bounced over everybody’s head and into the goal. Lake took the lead again through Mitch Yarnold.
Fittingly it was Morn who scored the winning penalty. Josh Tynan, Chris Walker and John Henry also found the net with their strikes. Applegate’s was saved.
There was late drama near the end of regular time when Lake officials attempted to substitute Warren, only to be told they’d run out of allotted changes.
Warren’s save in extra time would have meant even more as a result.
