A man and woman were thrown from a Commodore while travelling south on Burrawan Forest Drive.
The two occupants died at the scene. They have not been formally identified.
The accident occurred just prior to 3.30pm, about 100m south of the intersection at Burrawan Forest Drive and Birralee Drive.
Rural Fire Service workers, police, ambulance, NSW Fire and Rescue and SES vehicles attended the scene.
A police spokesperson said the car caught fire and the impact of the car against a tree had severely damaged the vehicle.
Phillip Lee was working at a residential property near the crash scene at the time of the accident.
The Port Macquarie resident had just driven out of Birralee Drive around 3.15pm when he heard an explosion and saw flames.
"I saw this big fire coming up [from the scene], and there was one police car down there," Mr Lee said.
"The police were using buckets to try and put the fire out, and then the bush fire [brigade] blokes turned up and tried to spray it to put it out."
Despite the best efforts of those immediately on the scene, the fire continued to burn.
"The fire was just too fierce," Mr Lee said.
"Everything just went up. There wasn't anything they could do."
IN A separate incident about 4.20pm yesterday, emergency services were called to Arakoon Road, Arakoon, after another car collided with a tree.
The male driver, who has not been formally identified, died at the scene.
Police from Mid-North Coast Local Area Command are investigating the circumstances surrounding both incidents.
Reports will be prepared for the Coroner.
