Jonathan Hadley was riding his Ninja ZX-6R motorbike about 60 metres past Barton Crescent when he noticed the koala a short distance ahead about to cross into his lane.
“I stopped and looked behind me and there was a car on the other side of Barton Crescent – near Fredo’s Meats – so I put on my hazard lights,” the 21-year-old said.
“Next minute the car hit the back of my bike and smacked into me and broke my leg.”
He recalls standing up and hobbling to the side of the road and realising his leg “wasn’t working properly”.
Although a little hazy on the details, Mr Hadley said the car was a Toyota Kluger and a woman and a child were in the vehicle in addition to the male driver.
The driver remained at the scene to speak with police.
Mr Hadley believes a female driver who stopped to lend assistance called an ambulance but is not sure who called police.
“I was in the worst pain I’ve ever been in,” the Caltex customer service casual said.
His leg was broken about 10cm above the ankle with both bones protruding through his flesh.
“I am lucky I didn’t see it.”
The accident occurred at around 6.20pm on July 1, when there were few other vehicles on Lake Road.
“I was grateful the koala was alright. I remember he was just looking at me for while and I asked for someone to get him off the road.
“Then he just wandered off.”
Mr Hadley, who was discharged from hospital on Thursday, said he has not yet spoken to police.
Doctors told him not to put pressure on his foot for six weeks so he will be on crutches until then at least.
