The last administrator, Neil Porter, resolved on May 25, 2012 to defer this item for consideration by the newly elected councillors.
More than 4000 signatures against fluoridation were collected around this time.
In 1991, 71 per cent of local residents voted against fluoridation in a poll coinciding with the council election. This followed public consultation and a council-sponsored debate.
In 2004, the Drew council asked NSW Health to decide if there was a strong case for fluoridating the Hastings. NSW Health said yes.
Minutes of the Advisory Committee Meeting held on July 14, 2004, to consider our case have been obtained through F.O.I. [Freedom of Information Act]. They reveal that the pros and cons were not discussed. Obviously this committee had decided to fluoridate before the meeting.
If this committee had deliberated fairly, it would have considered the NSW Dental Health Survey Data published in the year 2000.
This data shows that children on the Mid-North Coast had better dental health than 80 per cent of the children in fluoridated Sydney – evidence that fluoridation is not working.
CAF Inc. has also asked our councillors to seek assurances from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), and the US Toxicology Program that water fluoridation is not damaging our long-term health.
A failure to provide such assurances would provide a strong incentive for our council to explore ways of turning off the fluoride tap in order to protect citizens’ health and save $250,000 per year.
Governments need to find alternative solutions for disposing of industry’s toxic fluoride waste.
Dr John Lusk, President, CAF Inc.
