Scarlett is the president of the Hastings Valley Archery Club and has been shooting for seven years, ever since his in-laws bought his son, Ben, a bow.
“I’d had a bow as a kid myself but I never used it,” he said.
“So when my son started, I did as well.
“It’s a family sport and we both travel around together and compete.
“We’ve both gone to America and shot in the world titles in 2011.”
Ben has somewhat upstaged his father in recent years, winning three Australian player of the year awards in a row.
They travelled together and competed at the 3D World Championships, held in Buffalo in 2011.
Murray finished 57th and Ben 13th out of 117 competitors on their division, which was the advanced hunters class.
“I’d like to go back overseas, for sure,” he said.
“I’ve been state champion a few times and in 2012 I got second in the senior male class, which I shoot in now using a scope, where in the hunter class you can’t use a scope or big long gear.
“I was pipped by four points at the post at the nationals but won shooter of the year in 2012, which I was thrilled with.”
The Hastings Valley Archery Club holds monthly “come and try” days where all gear is supplied, as well as a sausage sizzle.
