THE multi-million dollar job to upgrade the airport runway is about to get under way. The works will strengthen and widen the runway, expand the apron space in front of the terminal building and provide the associated infrastructure.
Work is due to start next month. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council accepted a $17.5 million tender from Downer EDI Works for the airside project.
The helicopter landing and parking area will be relocated, as will the general aviation aircraft parking area, which will require the permanent closure of the east-west grass runway.
The $21 million project will be funded through $15 million from the federal government.
with the airport business unit, a stand alone commercial business unit of council, to meet the remainder of the cost.
