Mystery surrounds the two car-crash which sparked an emergency response at the intersection of Hastings River Drive and Gordon St just after 8pm.
A 52-year-old man was hospitalised with superficial wounds to his face and suffered shoulder and stomach pain after his car collided with another vehicle with an adult and two children inside.
Police said the three people in the other car, including the two kids aged six and 11, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital for observation.
Initial reports to paramedics had suggested the 52-year-old man was assaulted by a hitchhiker before the collision.
Police said they were told by witnesses that the man said he had picked up some passengers who fled the scene after the crash
Port Macquarie police duty officer Inspector Kerrie Brill told Fairfax police were yet to speak to injured the driver but at this stage there was “no actual evidence to support an assault” on him.
She agreed that if it was determined the man had been assaulted by the hitchhikers, the direction into the crash investigation would be likely to change.
Anyone who witnessed the crash and has not contact police should do via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
