The prestigious lawn bowls event, which boasts prizemoney of $17,000, is scheduled to be played from May 10 to 13.
Ninety-six players will contest sectional play on Monday and Tuesday, May 10 and 11, with the 24 winners moving through to the post-sectional play-offs on Wednesday, May 12.
Those successful bowlers then progress to the quarters, semis and final on Thursday, May 13.
“The players who reach Thursday’s play-offs will be richly rewarded with the winner walking away with $4500,” Port City’s bowls co-ordinator Charlie Buchanan said.
“Englishman David Holt, a former world champion and current state representative, Canadian Ryan Bester and New Zealander Rowan Brassey are joined in the field by ex-Australian and state team members Sam Laguzza, Shane Globits and Ian Taylor.
“We also have bowlers from Queensland, including last year’s winner Shannon Gittoes, South Australia, ACT and throughout New South Wales.
“A strong local contingent is headed by Alan Wares, Ken Paulson and current club champion Ian Binder from Port City, Westport’s Bruce Anderson, Kempsey heights’ Greg Powick and Alan Carver from Coffs Harbour, just to name a few.
“And, as it is an open event, two women – Port City’s Anna Davidson and Merlie McCabe, all the way from Lightning Ridge – are taking part too.”
Buchanan believes the 2010 crown is there for the taking.
“Every year, this tournament produces many surprises with unexpected results,” he said.
“This time around should be no different with the quality of the younger bowlers, who have entered.
“Port City extends an open invitation to all bowls enthusiasts to make their way down to have a look at the stars in action.
“It is a high-quality tournament with a high-quality field.”
Meanwhile, the Australian Unity-sponsored Prestige Pairs, worth in excess of $5000, is also on the calendar.
“This is another tournament, on June 16, 17 and 18, which has almost the maximum number of entries at this early stage,” Buchanan said.
“In fact, there are only about 10 vacancies available.
“These will go quickly, so if you’re interested, please get in contact with Port City to have your name pencilled in.
“The recent publicity in the ‘Bowls Alive’ magazine about the Port Macquarie Mixed Pairs event on July 1, 2 and 3, and involving Port City, Port Panthers and Westport clubs, has led to an avalanche of inquiries from interested bowlers.
“This is worth $7500 in prizemoney and, being billed as ‘possibly the biggest mixed tournament in the world’, it is filling quickly.
“Don’t miss out, contact any of the three clubs for details but be swift.”
