Garvey heads Open field

Garvey went down to former Australian star Rex Johnston 21-13 in the final of last year’s prestigious event, which boasts $20,000 in prizemoney.

Ninety-six players are scheduled to contest sectional heats today and tomorrow, with the 24 winners moving through to the post-sectional play-offs on Wednesday.

From there, the quarter and semi-finals are held on Thursday.

Those reaching Thursday’s matches will be richly rewarded, with the winner walking away with $5000.

Joining Garvey and ex-world titleholder David Holt are Sam Laguzza, who is still a top-liner and a member of the state senior side; Peter Foster, a NSW player from St Johns Park; and Paul Cousens, a champion bowler from Maitland.

Locals John O’Neill from host Port City, Bruce Anderson and Rocky Stone from Westport, Joel Bourke from Kempsey, and Coffs Harbour’s Alan Carver are also in the mix.

“Port Macquarie City Bowling Club has always demonstrated a capacity to give the Hastings a feast of top class bowling,” Aevum Living Open Singles committee chairman Reg Lucas said.

“Once again, our bowls co-ordinator David Gabb has secured a field of high standard bowlers from Australia as well as internationals.”
