Poulter is the club champion at Port Macquarie and comes up against some of the state’s best amateur golfers in the 36-hole Vardon event tomorrow and Sunday.
The Seaside Classic is one of the tournaments on the nominated list for the Vardon event, the symbol of supremacy for New South Wales’ amateurs.
Poulter has been in great form of late but he will need his best game on the weekend, as the field includes nearly 20 scratch markers.
New South Wales Golf Club’s Ken Lamb likes the chances of a couple of youngsters from the organisation.
“Matt Burns and Dean Van Kampen are both in excellent form,” he said.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of them win the Classic.”
There are a number of past winners saddling up again this year and two of the locals, Phil Pye and Brian Sams, are trying to secure their third Seaside Classic.
With so many good youngsters around, it is good to see some of the old hands like ex-members Brad Oliver and Brett Odgers here again.
Oliver, from Oxley in Queensland, and Odgers (Waratah) have been competing in the tournament for more than 20 years.
The Liverpool club always sends a strong contingent and they are led by scratch marker Craig Cox, who knows his way around the Port Macquarie course.
Brett Drewitt (Long Reef), Alex Edge (Macquarie Links), Matt Gleeson (Dubbo) and Logan Toms were among the leaders in 2008 and they are making another attempt to win the Classic.
Port Macquarie Golf Course is a challenging layout and golfing enthusiasts are invited to watch some of the state’s best in action.
A seeded draw will be used on Sunday.
