We're moat people, says MP

05 Jul, 2010 05:00 AM
THE debate about asylum seekers has become more political than it should be, Lyne MP Rob Oakeshott says.

Mr Oakeshott made the comment during a discussion about the politics at play behind Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s decision to shy away from a “big Australia”.

He said much of the debate around asylum seekers had been misguided.

“If you spend time looking at it, we in Australia are the moat people,” Mr Oakeshott said.

“The very fact that you have to get in a boat to get to Australia means we have much less of an issue than most other countries in the world.”

Mr Oakeshott believed the focus of debate should be on how quickly asylum seekers were processed.

The fact that questions about where and when they were processed had arisen made the subject a hot political topic, he said.

“In my view, if we are specifically talking about immigration strategy, if we were resourcing key departments to process genuine refugees within international standards, which are 90 days, this would not be a political issue,” he said.

“There are some strong views locally, but I suspect if they were given strong guarantees that processing would be done in 90 days, it would not be the issue it currently is.”

Meanwhile, Mr Oakeshott agreed it was time to review Australia’s population policy, with an emphasis on infrastructure planning and services.

He said population considerations should be “at the heart” of all government policy, and emphasised that it was not just an immigration issue.

“It’s a passive population policy we’ve got, where we don’t put a figure and we don’t engineer an outcome. We respond to what’s happening in both birth rates and immigration,” Mr Oakeshott said.

“So I really do think we need to be more explicit in defining our population, and, as a consequence of that, we can be more strategic in where we put our roads and hospitals and how we deliver good education.”

Well you and Labor have done nothing for our hospitals and roads Mr. Oakeshott! As for these economic refugees who pay US $10,000 to move to Australia well they can just send them back where they came from. What is the point of processing them any quicker when they shouldn't be here in the first place!!!!

If the debate re asylum seekers should not be political, then why are you Mr Oakeshott even talking about it---- are not you a politician? The issue should not even be the subject of a debate, for heavens sake dont you pollies get it, just enforce the existing laws of the land without the bleeding hearts, greens or any other dogooder flying the banner of political correctness.

I agree with you Jimbo! What a nerve he has saying this should not be a political debate! Well sorry Mr Oakeshott but Australians are sick of being taken for fools with regards these so called refugees! These economic refugees turn up to Christmas Island and dial the local harbour master on their mobile phone to come and get them. It is a joke!

Good to see that Aussie reputation for compassion, freedom and a 'fair go' is alive in the Hastings. There was me thinking ANZAC troops that fell fighting for freedom had died for an eternal cause.

I agree with what Jimbo and Victor wrote about Rob Oakeshott . Too right , Australians are fed up of being treated like idiots .Labor knows full well this is a major election issue so they hurry around making false policies and we know full well if Labor and Oakeshott wins , it will be business as usual . We all remember what Kevin Rudd said prior the 2007 elections "that he will turn the boats around " That changed very quickly after they won , nearly 150 boats later . Rob Oakeshott seems to support Labor all the way in whatever they do .It's as if he is their right hand man in this area . All boat people should be sent home ,1st available flight !. Lets fix up our own country before excepting more asylum seekers and most of all fix our homeless problems instead of giving all available housing to the Asylum seekers .

Perhaps this topic is worthy of a little debate but to seriously make this issue a genuine election issue is a joke. There are many many more pressing issues that should be taking priority over refugees but the way the media chases these stories and comments like the ones above show Australia would prefer to cling to its racist and ignorant views rather than debating legitimate concerns like Health,Roads, transport and climate. One of the tackiest and appalling things I have ever seen is the truck that the liberal party is sending around that keeps a count on the boats that arrive in Australia. It made me sick.

Once again Oakeshott proves he neither represents the Hastings not is he an 'independant' but just another left wing muppet. We have far too many problems of our own just here in the Hastings than to be dealing with any refugees AT ALL.

You listen to me Cruz Erwaite whoever you are - compassion begins at home and what the hell has this Labor Government done for our indigenous brothers??? NOTHING I tell you. Well I would prefer that all our hard earned tax payer dollars went into fixing the issues our indigenous brothers have then fixing crap overseas. At least we can say that our indigenous brothers were here first!!! You are your kind can nick off somewhere else! Stop the boats - AUSSIES FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
