More than 300 people packed Port Macquarie Panthers on Thursday for the event, to celebrate 20 years of Landcare and its volunteers, and recognise the award winners for this year.
While there were only 11 winners announced on the night, organisers of the event also acknowledged the hundreds of others in Landcare groups all over the state, whose efforts in repairing the environment and solving some of the nation’s land, water and coastal degradation issues go unsung.
The awards ceremony formed part of the 2009 NSW Landcare Forum, held over two days at the Glasshouse.
A focus of the forum and the awards was the celebration of Landcare’s 20th year and the vital contribution made by volunteers.
Over the past 20 years the Landcare movement has forged a new direction in community-based land management and practical environmental work through encouraging farmers, local residents and businesses to work together to protect and improve local environments and landscapes.
Hastings Landcare’s community support officer Ann Eggert said the calibre of this year’s award nominations was a sign of the valuable work going on in local communities across the state.
“The projects were fantastic, it was a really great night, and all the awards finalists got to present their projects on the closing day of the forum,” said Mrs Eggert.
Unfortunately, Hastings’ landcarers were so busy with organising the event they didn’t get a chance to put in an entry for the awards.
