GLASSHOUSE BLOWOUT: We can't afford it

26 Nov, 2009 07:51 AM
NEW figures have revealed that the Glasshouse will cost about $6 million a year to run.

And, that could be just too much for Port Macquarie-Hastings Council which is now looking at finding a private sector partner "to help redress the balance".

At last night's council meeting, administrator Garry Payne said the Glasshouse is not "core council business".

“The annual operating cost of around $6 million represents 6% of Council’s budget. This cost means we cannot complete other core business functions within a reasonable time frame. A private sector partnership may help redress this balance,” said Mr Payne.

It was also decided it should be left up to the Division of Local Government, not council to pursue legal action to recover some of the costs incurred as a result of the construction and operation of the Glasshouse.

Covert it to a carpark and cut your losses. Then sue those originally responsible to help off set some of the costs. Might seem ridiculous bulldozing the site after spending $50M to get it there but a forecast loss of $60M over the next 10 years,is money our community just can not afford.

Remove the building, and yes replace it with a carpark as mentioned above. Something of the GlassHouse requires more room for starters. With the money obtained by dismantle, build a NEW $1M skatepark at town beach..!! Replace our ancient bit of rubble, and give youth something to do..!! We put in the work with/for council attending the meetings, and all was thrown out the window once this mess come into town..!!

Its taken a long time but its best we all know the truth. Every day the glasshouse is kept open and operated by council it is costing us, the ratepayers, $16,500.00. What a legacy of our prior councillors! One hopes that those councillors will never again be given the opportunity to serve our community. I am sure there will be declarations of innocents, but, ignorance or inaction is no excuse of culpability! I am sure that the state division of local government will pursue all avenues with regard to the recovery of funds on our behalf. One suggestion by my son is, get a the ok from the state government and convert it to a casino! (lol) How entertaining!

This building should never have been built in the first place! Everything was done so secretive when it came to contractors and the like. I mean the council still has not paid fully for the new Link road yet!! This should have been more car parks like huggy bear said. I for one will never set foot in that monstrosity!

Sell it & cut your losses and while your at it sack the corporate services & finance staff who were responsible for the costings and budget preparations as they either did not know what they were doing or were purely incompetent. The whole process has been a fiasco from day one

Not only is it a financial white elephant with huge capital cost and now newly revealed operating losses, but it's as ugly and depressing as a prison in the middle of town. Who on earth is responsible for the drab dirty grey everywhere. Grey paving outside that's already looking grubby, dark grey flooring and walls inside, rough unfinished-looking surfaces. It might look OK in the picture at dusk with the lights on, but during the daytime, it's so miserable. It just drags the whole area down.

If not for the global financial crisis and the related slashing in value of council's investment portfolio (and income from those investments) the operating costs of the Glasshouse would not be a major issue. I have personally been to a performance at the theater which was sold out. People I speak to report similarly high attendance at shows they have been to see. Recent figures released by council show considerable numbers of visitors. Yes the construction cost was very high but the result is a first class facility that is being very well utilised by a significant portion of the local community, as well as visitors to the area. With some form of private partnership the ongoing costs to council would be reduced, while retaining a valuable facility. Joking about dozing the centre and replacing it with a parking station may be fun, for some, but it is not in any way helpful.

From the very beginning of the Glasshouse project it has made me very sad to see the proud community of Port Macquarie become so quick to judge, so eager to deliver criticism and so short sighted. This project, although it has been costly, will over time bring so much to our community. Think of the wonderful opportunities our children now have and with continuing growth and support, many generations of children to come. Think of the long term benefits. When did Port Macquarie become a town that would prefer a place to park instead of an opportunity to grow and expand? And when did we become a community that would rather pass uninformed judgements based on the newspaper headlines than ask questions and stand by our community representatives at the council? I know I voice the opinion of many in saying I support the Glasshouse and I support our council and have faith in their abilities and initiatives. Come on Port Macquarie, get over it and get on with it! Oh, and as for sacking the staff responsible? I thought you already did that!
