The 79-year-old heard noises at his back door about 10.15pm and when he investigated was attacked by three men.
They wrestled him to the ground and threatened with a knife while demanding cash.
The trio took cash and a mobile phone from the house before leaving.
The elderly man received cuts and grazes to his elbows and leg but did not need hospital treatment.
Although a police dog was used in the search for the three men, they could not be found.
Manning/Great Lakes detectives are looking for three men who have only been described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance and wearing dark-coloured hooded tops.
