After having to cancel events due to Covid restrictions and lockdowns, as well as some setbacks over the past couple of months, president of the Disabled Surfers Association Hastings Branch Dave Hancock said it was amazing to be back in the water.
"It was such a nice day on Saturday, the weather was just beautiful," he said.
"It means the world to our participants that they're able to join in the surfing lessons again.
"Although our numbers were down because it was our first event back and also heading into Christmas people have other events on, it was still great to be back in the water.
"The beach was really busy on Saturday so it was good for locals and visitors to see us and the work that we do."
Around six participants joined in on the surfing fun on Saturday.
"Our numbers are usually higher than that, but we're hoping our other events over the coming months will get our numbers back up again," Mr Hancock said.
"There aren't many other opportunities for people with a disability to try surfing or even just to get in the ocean in our area so being able to provide this service is so important."
The Disabled Surfers Association Hastings Branch have planned events from February through until April next year.
"It was a really good day on Saturday. We had a barbeque lunch after and everyone said it was an enjoyable day," Mr Hancock said.
"We're really looking forward to February's event now."
The Disabled Surfers Association Hastings Branch would like to thank the volunteers who give up their time to help run the event as well as their sponsors.
