A total of 90 acres of Port Macquarie land due to be re-zoned shortly for residential purposes have been bought up in a matter of weeks by a large Sydney-based property group.
This disclosure follows a warning given to the municipal council last Tuesday by the town engineer, Mr Eric Grogan, who said most of the land expected to be re-zoned in current amendments to the planning scheme had been obtained by the development company.
In an interview Mr Bruce Cowan, MLA, said it appeared that, as a fast growing community, Port Macquarie was going to suffer the problems at present facing the state government and other metropolitan areas where vast acreages were being zoned for residential purposes and were open to being bought up by developers.
The big danger in this was that, if some care was not exercised, a land divider could hold this land and not release it to the public for a number of years, Mr Cowan added.
"This land in Port Macquarie is only being subdivided to provide property at a reasonable cost to enable people to build homes. Developers could therefore defeat the whole basic object of the entire re-zoning procedure," he said.
Queen's Guide
Sixteen-year-old Rhonda Plews is the fifth Girl Guide from Port Macquarie's second guide company to earn the highly coveted Queen's Guide badge.
She was presented with her award by Ald C.C. Adams last week.
Ald Adams spoke about the grave concern in the town over the possible loss of youth organisations due to lack of parental support.
Rowathon washed out
Within minutes of the completion of the 18-mile rowathon down the Hastings River from Wauchope to Port Macquarie yesterday, one of the heaviest storms in months broke over the town.
As a result, the remainder of the day's events on the Town Green were rained out. The rowathon was organised by the Surf Club in an effort to assist the Carnival of the Pines committee to pay off money owing on their rescue boat.
The rain came in buckets while the surf club crews were scrambling for the river bank and the Wauchope pipe band were blowing the first strains of their bagpipes.
Heavy rain and hail continued to lash various parts of the Hastings district for the remainder of the day.
School Ceremony
The Kendall District Rural School's new secondary building extensions were officially opened by Bruce Cowan, MLA, last Friday.
The event was well attended by a large crowd of parents and local residents, including many former scholars.
The school's student choirs performed songs for the crowd as part of the official proceedings.
Remembrance Day
Armistice Day last week was marked by a brief service of remembrance and wreath-laying ceremony at the Port Macquarie War Memorial, followed by a dinner provided for the Hastings District's dwindling group of 1914-18 war veterans.
The reunion dinner at the RSL Club was an opportunity to meet up with their old comrades and swap some of the old trench jokes that helped to keep them alive during the First World War.
