For more than seven years they have headed to Flynns Beach in Port Macquarie as part of a summer ritual once the nippers program has started.

He says that's unlikely to change anytime soon after another season of beach sprints, flags and board events started last weekend.

"Not everyone is happy to come down every Sunday, but it's a thing that we're a family and we come down as a family and that's the way it's going to stay for the kids unfortunately," he said.

"We've been coming down since our eldest Charlotte was in under-5s and it's a Sunday tradition now."

Growing up on the beach meant it was a natural progression for the family to take up surf life saving especially through Mr McEntyre's role running water safety.

"I do a bit of water safety so I think I get the most enjoyment out of that," he said.

"Seeing the smiles on the kids' faces and watching all the kids in the club grow is what it's all about, for sure."

Wife Monique and children Charlotte, Eli and Antonia can't wait for the 2021/2022 season to start on December 5.

"I have lots of fun doing competitions on the board and especially doing it with my friends in the water as well we have lots of fun," Charlotte said.

Antonia and Eli both enjoy the sand events.

"I enjoy the games. My favourite game is the flags because I normally come first," Eli said.

Eli will compete in the under-8s so the family still has at least another six-year involvement with the Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club.

What happens from there is anyone's guess.

"There'd be nothing better to come down as a grandparent and see it all over again," Mr McEntyre said.
