"One of the best ways to ensure everyone stays safe this bushfire season is to have a chat with family, neighbours and work mates about what you can do to get ready for disasters," said Blayne West, natural resources manager Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.
"Communities that are better prepared and connected have a greater opportunity to recover well."
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has been managing its extensive Asset Protection Zone network to ensure commercial and residential properties adjacent to council land are prepared.
There are easy effective steps you can take.
- Know your risk: Think about the area you live in and the types of disasters that could affect you.
- Plan now for what you'll do: Sit down and talk with your family and plan what you will do if a disaster strikes.
- Get your home ready: Prepare by doing general home maintenance and check your insurance.
- Be aware: Find out how to prepare and what to do in case of disaster. Connect with NSW emergency services.
- Look out for each other: Share information with family, friends, neighbours and those who need assistance.
