"We live in a society absolutely dependent on science and technology and yet have cleverly arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. That's a clear prescription for disaster." - Carl Sagan

Philosophy seems to offer a muddled view about what science is. For example, Idealists, Empiricists, Kuhnians, Popperians, Positivists, Analytics, Postmodernists and others all have different views.
The next Port Macquarie Philosophy Forum will be held on Sunday, October 31 between 4.15pm and 5.45pm at the CWA Rooms on Town Green in Port Macquarie.
Guest speaker will be David Smith who has a degree in Electrical Engineering from London University. Much of his career was spent as a computer trouble-shooter.
He started studying philosophy informally in 2007 and started presenting courses at Port Macquarie-Hastings U3A on philosophy and several other topics in 2012.
He has had a particular interest in the place of science in our society and how it has been undermined by vested interests.
This, he believes, is now causing great harm.
Dave and his wife Carol moved to Port Macquarie from Sydney in 2011 and they are two of the four founders and organisers of the Port Macquarie Philosophy Forum.
This talk will cover the ideas of Sir Karl Popper, as they come closest to Dave's understanding of what science is, with regards to his own scientific studies.
He will cover his ideas about the following:
- What is the scientific method?
- What is the demarcation between science and non-science?
- What are some of the lessons that science brings to society more generally? eg The open society.
Dave will also discuss why there is a broad attack on science from so many directions.
General admission including seniors $10. Pensioners and students $5
