While the impact of the coffee bean shortage hasn't been felt locally just yet, roasters believe it's only a matter of time.
Peak Coffee Australia owner and Cafe Culture International director, Sean Edwards said factors including the coronavirus pandemic, high cost of shipping, shortage of skilled workers on farms and environmental challenges associated with climate change have all contributed to the heightened cost of coffee beans.
"The consumer will see it, as it's way overdue," he said.
Mr Edwards said roasters should have increased the price of coffee years ago, after predicting the price hike.
"Ten years ago you could buy a kilogram of green beans for $6 and now it's $14, but the price of a cup of coffee has stayed at $4."
However, Mr Edwards said there was too much competition for them to carry out the rise at the time.
He hopes consumers might be prepared to pay an extra dollar for a cup of coffee, to help alleviate pressure felt by the coffee roasters.
Premium Coffee Roasters owner Kerry Johnston predicts consumers may feel the impact of the price rise within six to 12 months.
Mr Johnston said currently the price of his coffee bean supply from overseas has not changed significantly, with the exception of a couple of countries.
"I get my coffee from an importer in Sydney, which sources beans from a number of locations around the world," he said.
Mr Johnston is confident people will still choose to purchase their favourite beverage and support their local barista, regardless of the price hike.
