Maguire was injured in a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday and will miss United's match against Spanish team Villarreal in the Champions League group stage on Wednesday.

United host Everton in the Premier League on Saturday before the international break.

"It's his calf. That might take a few weeks, so let's see how quickly he recovers," Solskjaer said on Tuesday.

Solskjaer was more optimistic about left back Luke Shaw, who also left Saturday's game injured. Shaw didn't train with the team on Tuesday.

"Luke has been in today, so I'll give him a chance to be involved tomorrow," the manager said.

Alexander-Arnold missed Liverpool's match with Porto on Tuesday and manager Juergen Klopp said: "It didn't look serious but we did further assessment and it was serious. It doesn't look great for the City game.

"It's a muscle thing. We thought it was just tight from (Saturday's Brentford) game."

Kante has been ruled out of Wednesday's Champions League match with Juventus and Chelsea's home game against Southampton on Saturday. he is also a doubt for France's Nations League semi-final against Belgium on 7 October.

Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson has also tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss the club's next two matches in the second-tier Championship. Pearson, who will be consigned to 10 days of self-isolation, was previously ill with long Covid.

"When I contracted Covid back in March, I wasn't particularly unwell, didn't have a lot of symptoms," Pearson said in November 2020.

"I didn't feel quite right, but otherwise I felt fine. It's something that has developed at a later date. I had some heart issues, and then joint issues... it was a difficult time. Through August and September, I was particularly unwell."
