Port Macquarie Hastings Council and the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise are issuing a final call for names of competitors and volunteers who have made an impact in their chosen sports over the last two years.
Up to $7,000 in prizes are on offer across nine categories, and there is a major opportunity for local athletes to be recognised, and receive funding to help them achieve their elite sporting dreams.
The organising committee is excited to reveal that the winners will be announced by social media this year.
Jenny Sinclair, Sports Awards Committee Chair said that the nominees for each category will be publicised via social media and on both council's and Rotary's website from October 10.
"Moving to the online platforms allows us to be creative with videos and interviews with category winners," Mrs Sinclair said.
The major announcements of 2021 Sports Person of the Year and recipient of the Mayor's Sporting Fund Scholarship will be made on Friday, October 22.
"We would have loved to get together for our annual breakfast awards event, but due to COVID restrictions this will not be possible. In these times, it is more important than ever to bring some positivity and good news and recognise our local sporting champions," Mrs Sinclair said.
For the first time, the nomination period covers all sporting activity and achievements across a two year period from October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2021, as the event was not held in 2020 under the previous COVID-19 restrictions.
Mayor Peta Pinson said she is thrilled the achievements of the region's talented community members over the last two years can still be celebrated, albeit through a different means.
"Our willingness to come together to uplift one another time and time again through challenging periods shows our community's resilience, and that our achievements are worth celebrating," the mayor said.
"I'm looking forward to the announcements, and encourage any talented sports star who isn't already in the running to put their name forward for a chance to accelerate their careers. All the best to those in the running for a share of the prizes and recognition of their past efforts."
Nominations close at midnight on Thursday, 30 September.
