Reynolds requires just eight points to overtake Simms' mark of 1841, which has stood since he overtook Bernie Purcell in 1971.

Bound for Brisbane at the end of this season, it at one stage appeared questionable whether Reynolds would claim the record which for so long appeared destined to be his.

But the Rabbitohs' points-scoring spree in 2021 has Reynolds averaging 11 points per game, the most at any time in his 10-year career.

It puts him on track to claim the record in Friday night's clash with Parramatta at Cbus Super Stadium.

"That's quite an achievement (breaking Simms' record), actually," Bennett said.

"I think it's probably been under played right now.

"Eric Simms is a great player, I remember him as a little boy playing for South Sydney and what a great reputation he had and everything.

"It's been quite a record it's been there for a long time and I can't think of a nicer guy than Adam.

"I'm sure (Eric) would agree that he is worthy."

Simms' record is the longest standing points-scoring mark at any club, and is a throwback to the day of two-point field goals.

In that sense, Reynolds is a fitting successor.

The No.7 is widely regarded as one of the best kickers of the modern game and the iceman when under pressure to nail a field goal.

It will also be a a just reward for Reynolds, who was told earlier this year by Souths that he would not be offered a new multi-year deal.

The 31-year-old was the halfback who took them to their drought-breaking premiership in 2014, and earlier this year claimed Simms' record as most goals for the club.

Meanwhile, Bennett confirmed that Benji Marshall - fresh out of two weeks in hotel quarantine - would face the Eels on the Gold Coast.

Marshall has not played since round 17, having flown up to Queensland with families and his newborn daughter after teams did.

The 36-year-old was only able to complete limited gym time in hotel quarantine, before joining Rabbitohs teammates on Wednesday.

"It's just like having an injury. He's come back and got on with life," Bennett said.

"He's a tremendous professional, he prepares himself really well every week and he knows what he needs.

"He hasn't even asked me to tell him he's playing time tomorrow he just wanted to be in the team and I wanted him in the team."
