"When members of the Library Committee gave Mrs. Kirkness the okay to go ahead with her plans for Book Week we did not think it would be such a big success," said Mr. de la Rue at the presentation of prizes to the various winners of the Book Week competitions.
Mr. de la Rue said he was pleased to see so many children making use of the library and he encouraged them to keep up their interest.
He said "we commend reading to you because it is something you should practise and therefore learn to make use of books in your life."
Mrs. Kirkness, the librarian, thanked all the entrants for their efforts throughout the week and added that she hoped the children enjoyed it as much as members of the library had. Mr. Lewis was judge of the competition.
VIEW Club Birthday
Recently, a happy group exceeding 100 celebrated Port Macquarie View Club's fourth birthday at a luncheon in the surf club pavilion. President Pat McSkimming opened the proceedings with a welcome to all. She then introduced the guest speaker, Rev. R. J. Allan, who gave a most interesting address on the "refugee problem" of India and Pakistan.
He also told of some amusing experiences he had during his stay in India. Rev. Allan proved to be a charming and entertaining speaker. During the afternoon Gwen Hopton entertained those present with two delightful songs, accompanied on the piano by Elsie Tanner.
Pride of place on the official table was the birthday cake made by "Nicky" Adams, and decorated by Vi Peters. When president Pat blew out the candles and cut the cake all present sang 'happy birthday'. At the conclusion of the meeting everyone took the opportunity to wish the best of luck to President Pat in the forthcoming VIEW woman of the year contest.
Athletics Carnivals
The Port Macquarie High School Athletic Carnival last week was one of the most closely contested for some years. Hastings House with 1137 points won from Oxley House, 1048 points. New times were established and new distances set up as records toppled in all directions.
The 14-year-old boys established three new records, and altogether the boys set six new records. The girls set new record times in no less than eight events. Port Macquarie Primary School's sports carnival was held last Wednesday. Hastings House was the winner of the McLaren Shield with 102 points.
Service Station Ban Sought
When an almost completed service station in Gordon Street, Port Macquarie, opens for business next month it will be the 16th such business in operation in the town.
Fifteen service station proprietors operating in town wrote to Tuesday night's meeting of the municipal council stressing the detrimental effect on their businesses if council approves the erection of any further service stations.
The council resolved to inform the proprietors that provided an application did not conflict with town planning zoning and was in accordance with ordinances the council had no power to refuse it.
"It really rests with the petrol companies and the service station proprietors should direct their appeal to them", said Ald. Gott.
