It wasn't all smooth sailing early for the 18's as Port City Breakers fullback Xavier Davidson scored down the right to make it 6-0.
The clinical finishing of Braith Powick was on display again as the next 20 minutes saw the Mustangs winger score a double, following on from his two tries last week.
Powick's first effort came off a pinpoint Shane Davis-Caldwell kick to the corner with the halfback converting.
12 minutes later Powick caught a Tim Bull cross field kick, grubbered to himself and scored to make it 12-6.
A penalty goal to Breakers on half-time saw Mustangs hold a tight four point lead.
Macleay Valley were first to strike after the break as Chris Bull's power proved too much to handle after a short-side play from Davis-Caldwell gifted him his second assist and third conversion.
Five minutes later, Breakers made matters interesting as lock Josh Power went over to make it 18-14.
With both sides going end to end, a try seemed inevitable.
Two minutes to go, fifteen metres out from the try-line, the ball landed in the hands of Tyrell King.
King took defenders with him to march his way over the line and seal a 22-14 victory.
A decent wind saw plenty of errors throughout the game with coach Reuben Jones satisfied to get the two points.
"We did it ugly but a win's a win," he said.
The Mustangs will now move onto their Wingham fixture next weekend.
