Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has commenced planning works to upgrade Boundary Street from Hastings River Drive to the airport car park.
The preliminary works are a part of council's 2020-2021 operational plan and a long-term plan to provide a safer, flood-free, more accessible access road to the airport and neighbouring business park.
Boundary Street will be upgraded to arterial road status and is a part of council's transport planning to support regional growth over the next 20 years.
As part of the safety requirements, a median is required to separate traffic and maintain suitable flow. With the exception of turning lanes into Regional Stadium and Newman College, this will remove the ability for vehicles to turn right off or onto Boundary Street from both sides of the road.
The proposed design works will include:
- Widening Boundary Street to provide two traffic lanes on each side of the road
- Installing a new roundabout to the southern end of Boundary Street
- Providing a shared path on the west side
- Providing embankment or retaining wall on both the east and west sides
- Renewed drainage along Boundary Street
- Replacing the existing culvert crossing
- Reconstructing and resurfacing the road base on Boundary Street
- Upgrading driveways to existing properties impacted by the works
- Upgrading the Hibbard Ferry approach to the north of Hastings River Drive with the installation of an information bay and queuing lanes.
Council says the project will provide 20-year flood event immunity; improve access and safety for pedestrians and cyclists; and improve efficiency for people accessing the airport.
