Mid North Coast Police District Crime Manager, Detective Acting Inspector Pete O'Reilly said the investigation is a priority for detectives and police are following all avenues of inquiry.

"We're looking at all aspects of Steven's life, his associates and the people he lived in close contact with to try and ascertain what happened to Steven on that night," he said.

Steven lived alone in a unit complex on Hill Street, Port Macquarie.

At around 8.45pm on May 4, emergency services were called to the address in response to a report that a chair had been set on fire on a balcony outside the 54-year-olds unit.

"When emergency services arrived the fire had been extinguished and Steven was located lying face down beneath the balcony. Any attempts to revive Steven were unsuccessful," Det A/Insp O'Reilly said.

Detectives attached to Mid North Coast Police District established Strike Force Fernyhough to investigate the circumstances surrounding Steven's death.

"The post-mortem examinations have revealed that Steven passed away as a result of blunt force trauma to his head."

Detectives are unable to confirm whether the injury to Steven's head was from being struck by an object or a result from a fall from the balcony.

"There's a number of possibilities we are investigating regarding how that injury was sustained. It's a particularly violent injury," Det A/Insp O'Reilly said.

Detectives have obtained a number of statements from people who were in the area at the time of Steven's death and are now appealing to members of the public for further information.

"If anyone has any CCTV or dashcam footage, we would really like those people to come forward," Det A/Insp O'Reilly said.

"If anyone can assist us with information about Steven, his movements and who he was associating with, we would like them to come forward as well."

Detectives are investigating the incident with an open mind and said all lines of inquiry will be looked at.

"We are aware Steven had some form of interaction with people on that night and that's certainly part of our investigation," Det A/Insp O'Reilly said.
